Two Way Radio has traditionally been the conventional way of communicating between the Kart Driver and Pit Crew.

The Kart is fitted with a two-way radio (Walkie Talkie) and so is the Pit Crew.

The Driver has a headset inside their helmet with a microphone and either two slim speakers, or a pair of in-ear noise cancelling micro-speaker earplugs, linked to the radio and PTT (transmit) button on the steering wheel with a wiring harness.

The Pit / Engineer wears a headset “Cans” with speakers and a boom microphone to eliminate external noise.

The Driver presses a button to transmit and the Pit / Engineer presses a button to reply.

They cannot both talk at the same time.

There are two types of Kart Communications system:

Two-way Radio (Walkie Talkies) OR Bluetooth.

Bluetooth is a relatively new technology for communicating in Kart racing.

As above, it allows the Kart Driver to communicate with the Pit / Engineer, but in a different manner from two-way radio.

The Kart Driver has the Bluetooth unit fitted to their helmet, or on a lanyard around their neck, with a microphone and either speakers, or in-ear micro-speaker earplugs.

There are no wires to the Kart and as the units are in constant contact, there is no need for a PTT (transmit) button.

The Pit Crew / Engineer wears a headset “Cans” with speakers and a boom microphone to eliminate external noise.

The “Cans” are connected to a Bluetooth unit instead of a radio, so no need to press a button to talk with the Kart Driver.
